Ashley Champagne started Little Icons in the spring of 2016. Her 15+ year photography career has been focused on editorial, fashion, commercial photography, and portrait work for bands and musicians. When her daughter was born she saw the value of photographs in a new way. |
||
For the first 3 years, Ashley and her family lived in Nashville, and would travel between Tennessee and their hometown, Edmonton, Alberta, to offer Little Icons sessions to over 1000 families. |
PHILOSOPHY |
The heart of our mission is to help children feel seen, loved, and valued. We hope that by finding themselves in images that they are proud of, we can contribute to their confidence in some way. The best images come from authentic moments. We enjoy guiding in a playful manner, providing families with individual portraits of their children that truly celebrate who they are! |

I want other people to have photographs like this of their kids; timeless portraits presented in a raw, authentic way. Some of the best frames come from the in-between!" Person L. |

They Say |
They Say |
Our aim is to photograph children as people, in a respectful, eloquent way while pulling out enough stops to keep them engaged and interested. Or at least between the back drop and the light! You'd be amazed at what comes out of these moments. Our favourite aspect of the little icons portraits is the idea that these still frames capture truth about each individual and that they are presented in a way that tells us and them, that they are important. |
The TEAMOver the years the demand for the Little Icons signature portrait style has far outweighed what Ashley could provide as one photographer. In the spring of 2021, Ashley began training a team of photographers in Canada and United States. It has been wonderful to find like-minded people who are on board with our concept, and to train them in the Little Icons style and methods. The feeling of witnessing the joy that these images bring to the families who entrust us to capture these amazing little humans, in the most tender chapters of their lives, is incomparable. With love and care, the Little Icons team pays close attention to the subtleties of each child's mannerisms and expressions to capture unforced, unexpected moments. The style and sincerity of these images guarantees their value as priceless sentimental artifacts to be endlessly enjoyed! |

Heading + StuffWe begin all sessions in a calm, warm, welcoming vibe and once we see what the child is like, we unfold in a manner that we predict will work for them specifically. If we start too loud or "big" it is very easy to intimidate or lose report with a child, that is hard to come back from. It is far easier to build up, than to convince them to come back after they are scared (even if your greeting was super friendly!) Sometimes we remain on the calm quiet side for the duration of the shoot so as not to overwhelm a more introverted, shy, or nervous kid. Other times we will use high energy to excite someone who is more extroverted, or hyper/high energy! We may use a serious tone of voice to interact with a more intellectual person- we would ask different questions in these circumstances SubheadingIn order to create a genuine connection and an open space, it is important to step outside of yourself to be able to witness the nature of each child, and to communicate in a way that makes them feel comfortable and seen. Some kids will be quicker than others to open up, some will be really really tough to crack! There are times when children have so much energy that it is incredibly difficult to get them to sit still and pay attention. For some, it may be a bad day, attitude or attachment issues that hold them back. |
It is our job to be the calm in the storm. It is also our job to reflect joy back to them, and to meet them with the level of enthusiasm they need. It is important to be creative in our interactions! We are offering an invitation to create images together, sometimes we are the guide and sometimes we follow their lead.
